I’m sure as business professionals you have already heard of the 80 20 rule being 80 percent of all your results have come from 20 percent of your efforts. But have you heard of how to maximize this knowledge and apply it so it can start working for you? From doing research not only in real world situations but from case studies and books I have learned how to hone in and take away some time consuming stress from your life.
I’d like to start by sharing this story. I had lists for everything: work, family, chores, events etc. The lists would be extremely time consuming and I would everyday become overwhelmed with the to dos there were. That’s when the famous rule came back around to me. I applied the 80 20 rule to the lists and crossed off most of my objectives narrowing down to 20% what the most important things were to do. Then I attacked them ferociously. Getting extremely efficient at that 20 percent until I realized I could even further cut that into another 20 percent. The list of to dos went away as my focus became narrower. The craziest part about it was that not only was I doing 90 percent less of what I did before I actually got a promotion!
The truth is through the day we should be focused with one intent and purpose on a larger scheme we would like to achieve. If you hold true to that focus and narrow down what you need to do to get there life will be much less stressful and you will become more productive and decisive.
